Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth Launches ‘School of Kalayoga’ in Baner to Promote Indian Classical Music

Pune, March 6, 2026: A new chapter in Indian classical music education began in Pune as Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth inaugurated the ‘School of Kalayoga’ at Baner on Friday, March 6. The institute was formally inaugurated by Pujya Swami Swaroopanand, head of Chinmaya Mission and Vice-Chancellor of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth.

Pune, known for its rich cultural and artistic heritage, now gets a unique centre dedicated to nurturing Indian classical music through a blend of traditional and modern educational approaches. The School of Kalayoga aims to revive the ancient guru–shishya tradition while integrating it with a structured university system, offering students both experiential learning and recognized academic degrees.

Speaking at the inauguration, Pramodini Rao, Director of Chinmaya Naad Bindu in Pune and Head of the School of Kalayoga, emphasized the importance of reconnecting with India’s cultural roots. She said that India’s ancient knowledge traditions hold immense experiential wisdom. According to the vision of Swami Tejomayananda, the true purpose of music is to elevate art, artists, and audiences to a higher spiritual and cultural plane. Hence, music education should go beyond technical training and nurture deeper artistic and spiritual understanding.

The institute will offer a four-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music, a two-year Master’s degree, and PhD programs in music. Students will be able to specialize in Hindustani vocal music, flute, and tabla at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The doctoral program will focus on research in performance studies, pedagogy, musicology, and Indian knowledge traditions.

A key feature of the School of Kalayoga is its two-tier teaching approach, where traditional mentorship by gurus is complemented by academic guidance from faculty members. Through concerts, music gatherings, festivals, and interactions with eminent scholars, the institute aims to create a vibrant cultural environment where music is practiced not just as a subject, but as a lifelong discipline and spiritual pursuit.
